5.1 Crosses

The form of the cross is the organising element in the chaotic use of colour and line, and leads to an artistic unity. The Greek form of the cross can be secluded in a circle (as opposed to the long stretched Gothic form of the cross). Man is the central object in this form; the circle encloses the human figure.

E.g. 6 th of march: Five scenes painted in the form of a cross, symbolising birth and rebirth. The mystic wounds on the hands evocate initiation. It is a sign that we are vulnerable yet eager for new things to come.

e.g. 95% of US … Man is the central element in this series of eight paintings. The rags of rope and the game symbolise the trancience of life. The two bars of the cross - one vertical and one horizontal - are the two poles, the heavy and the light side of life. In the middle we find the harmony, the meeting. The bars refer as well to the four points of the compass, the structure of the cosmos.

De kruisen zijn een ordenend element. Ze regelen het chaotisch gebruik van kleur en / of lijn en leiden tot een schilderkunstig geheel. De Griekse kruisvorm kan binnen een cirkel worden omsloten (in tegenstelling tot de langgerekte gotische kruisvorm). Hierin staat de mens centraal: de cirkel omsluit de menselijke figuur.

bijv. 6 maart: vijf tafereeltjes in kruisvorm opgebouwd, roepen het symbool op van de geboorte, wedergeboorte, het herboren worden. De mystieke verwonding van de handen vervult de rol van de initiatie. Het is een teken dat we kwetsbaar zijn, maar tegelijkertijd ook openstaan voor het nieuwe.

bijv. 95% of us … De mens staat centraal in dit achtdelig schilderstuk. De uitrafelende koord en het kansspel geven symbolisch de draad van het voorbijgaande leven weer. De verticale en de horizontale balken van het kruis vormen twee polen: de zware en de lichtere kanten van het leven, met in het midden de harmonie, de ontmoeting. Ze verwijzen ook naar de vier windstreken: ze zijn de structuur van de cosmos.
